We’re going to watch a story about a time when Jesus met a guy named Zacchaeus. We’ll call him “Zach.”
That’s pretty cool, that Jesus could help a greedy man — someone who cared only about taking as much money as he could — and turn him into a generous man — someone who cared about giving away as much money as he could!
Talk about it!
SAY: Let’s read this Bible verse together. It’s from a book written by Matthew, one of Jesus’s friends.
No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.
MATTHEW 6:24
SAY: Wow! So if we had to pick between loving our money or loving God, which one does Jesus say we should love more? Which one did Zach love more at the beginning of the story? What about at the end?
SAY: This probably made some people think, “Hold on, but don’t we need money for food and clothes and our house?! What are you talking about, Jesus?” Look at what Jesus said next:
Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
MATTHEW 6:25-26
ASK: What do you think that means? (God will take care of us, so we don’t have to worry so much about money, food, clothes, etc.)
ASK: What’s one way we can show God we care more about Him than money?
